Arachne, (Greek Mythology) her name meaning spider in Greek, was a beautiful woman that had a great talent in weaving. Everyone was amazed at her work and one day, Arachne boasted that she had a greater talent than goddess Athena herself. This was a big no no so Athena challenged Arachne to a contest.
Athena was first and wove a beautiful tapestry depicting the epic majesty of the gods, everyone was amazed, then Arachne wove hers depicting the gods and their infidelities and less flattering traits also beautifully done.
Athena had to admit her work was brilliant and flawless but was angered by Arachne's humiliating portrayal of the gods, and out of that anger transformed Arachne into a human spider creature, proclaiming that Arachne and all her descendants would henceforth hang forever from threads and be skillful weavers.
